On Sunday, July 30, Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog and 14 others, including his wife Susan, brother Octavio Jr., and sister Mona, were slain in a police raid.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), in cooperation with the Misamis Occidental Police Provincial Office and the Ozamiz City Police Station raided the Parojinog residence at around 2:30 am.
The authorities had a search warrant for the mayor and several other family members. According to the report of the police, the shootout began when Parojinogs’ security forces fired at the police prompting them to strike back.
“Police were serving a search warrant when the security guards of the mayor fired at them so our policemen retaliated,” police regional spokesman Superintendent Lemuel Gonda told Agence France-Presse.
Police also invaded Vice Mayor Nova Parojinog’s residence, two other Parojinogs’ farms and properties, Northern Mindanao Police Chief Supt. Timoteo Pacleb said.
The vice mayor and her brother Reynaldo “Dodo” Parojinog Jr. were arrested by the police and were brought to Manila for inquest proceedings.
Meanwhile, many citizens of Ozamiz City rejoiced upon finding out the incident. Dubbed as ‘untouchable’ for years, a netizen shared that the clan, especially the mayor, remained untouchable by the hands of the law and was feared by the people of Ozamiz.
“I’m from Ozamiz. Thanks to PNP CIDG congratulations. Thanks Tatay Digong for war on drugs. The Parojinogs lorded over Ozamiz as untouchables by the hands of law since time immemorial. So terrifying [that] their names were hesitant to be mentioned explicitly, even us students studying as far as Central Visayas.”
“The dreaded Kuratong Baleleng, where Lacson was once charged of rubout, hailed from their turf and their reach was vast and deep that it was reckoned they could give MILF a run for their money in gun fight.”
“I had seen Aldong cried on TV when Digong mentioned him included in his list and it was then I know their good ‘ole’ days were over,” she said.
Another netizen claimed that the death of their mayor is the beginning of the rebuilding Ozamiz City.
“Ozamis is starting to rebuild a drug-free city. Thanks to our president, the shabu capital is now a safe zone for now. Amen for that,” he said.
